V ISITORS' AND NEWCOMERS' GUIDE TO THE
BEAUTIFUL JEWEL OF EAST TEXAS

In this pine paradise of East Texas, the placid beauty of Lake Sam Rayburn beckons to fishermen with the lure of reeling in the top prize in seasonal BASS TOURNAMENTS!!  Thousands of dollars are offered to the GREATEST FISHERMEN catching the BIG BASS!!  YOU CAN CATCH BIG BUCKS!!

Gazing upon the softly swaying tall pines can result in restful seclusion and peace of mind for your soul and spirit.  Jasper has a beauty and quietness all its own as its longtime residents, as well as newcomers, are thrilled to relate to you.

Hunting and fishing opportunities abound as well as the unsurpassed beauty, which is breathtaking!  Area bait and tackle shops, with essential supplies and information, can contribute to assuring that fishermen have successful excursions.  Hunting supplies are readily available at the local Wal-Mart for avid hunting enthusiasts.

Of historical note, Henry Stephenson was the first Protestant preacher to come into Texas.  He was a Methodist minister and began preaching in the San Augustine and East Texas area, including Jasper County.  He preached and established a Methodist Camp Meeting Ground in the late 1830's.  This is where the Camp Ground Cemetery is today.  Additional land was later acquired, and it became Curtis Methodist Church, one of the present churches in Jasper today.

The oldest house in Jasper is located at 668 North Main Street.  It was built in 1853 by Arnold Reeses's grandfather. It is a large white clapboard building with gable roof and dormer windows.  It was built before the Civil War, with a long, wide front porch.  It is unique to the area, and something to see, for sure.

Of course, the town has a convenient library and quaint courthouse square full of the town's history.  The original jail still stands on the square  As a side note, George Jones once spent the night there in this jail in his early years!
